Just for info, the problem is now sorted and you may (or may not) be interested in knowing what was causing it for future reference; Turns out it was a dodgy connection going into the injector, creating the fuel knock and smoke. Local Pug garage were really helpful and diagnosed AND fixed it for free!!
HELP!! I'm due to take my '98 406 TD estate (pre-Hdi) to France in a week and it's not well!! Due to it being very smoky, especially on start-up, I had the glow-plugs changed yesterday. All seemed fine driving the 30 miles home and back to work today, but just now I drove a short distance and it sounded terrible! The tick-over is much more rattly (like a heavy Transit rattle) and there's a LOT of black smoke coming out the back. It seems to pull normally. I did drive home yesterday in a low gear (so high revs) to blow some of the soot out of the exhaust, but not sure whether that's part of the problem. Can anyone help??
