I have a 405, which has at some point been given an engine swap. The engine I have is stamped on the left side of the block (front of engine bay) with the ID code 10CU7D and number. A google search of the engine code (which is not listed in the UK) brought up forums and for sale ads, all in Eastern European languages. From this I figured that the 10CU7D code denotes an engine that was produced and sold in former Eastern block countries. On further investigation, the 1905 diesel engine was produced apparently under licence by FSO Lublin, Poland, in the early '90s until FSO was bought by Daewoo. Can anyone shed any light on this? Does anyone know about it?

Peugeot did sign an agreement with FSO Lublin in 1992 to manufacture the 405 in Poland. This ended in 1995 after less than 4000 cars were built. The initial deal was to have 2,000 405 built per year from 1993 to reach 10,000 units per year 4 years later. Things never went that far... All "standard" 1.9 Diesel or TurboDiesel engines fitted to the 405 are XU type. 1.9D 69bhp XUD9A D9B 03/88->12/92 1.8TD 90bhp XUD7TE A8A 03/88->12/92 1.9TD 90bhp XUD9TE DHY 08/92->10/95 1.9D 64bhp XUD9Y DJZ 08/88->10/95 1.9D 68bhp XUD9A DJY 08/92->10.95 1.9TD 92bhp XUD9TF D8B 08/92->

Thank you for your help - yes, the XUs are all I can find here, and 1995 fits with the Daewoo sale. I'm told the engine came from a car bought new in the UK with the Polish engine - do you know whether when the deal ended some parts may have been sent over to be assembled elsewhere? Or would the car the engine came from have been built in Lublin for export? It was right-hand drive.

I have no idea about parts leftover after the agreement was ended.
FSO did not built RHD 405 for the UK market, they only manufactured cars for the Polish and, to a lesser degree, Eastern Europe market.

Thanks again, this is a huge help. Now all I need to find out is how an FSO engine ended up in a brand new car in the UK, but with your help I have some good pointers and a large part of the mystery demistified.
