Hello. My '98 406 TD estate creates a LOT of black / grey smoke on cold starts and under acceleration. I've changed the glow plugs and air filter but it has made no difference. It is also reluctant to start on the first turn of the key (even when I leave the warm-up period for a bit longer after the orange indicator light goes out), although always starts on 2nd. It MAY be my imagination but fuel consumption seems to have increased slightly too (although I'm not sure about this). Can anyone help? It's done 130k miles. Cheers.

You do not mention any power loss so I assume the turbo is working and it does not use water. Before you think of big expensive jobs give it a "Forte treatment".That is,Forte engine flush in the oil, change the fuel filter and fill the housing with Forte diesel treatment, then give it a 2nd &3rd gear flat to the floor 5000rpm thrashing for 20 miles or more. Then change the oil and oil filter.I do that before mot`s on all TD`s and it allways works.
