I have bought a 605 SVE, that has an auto box. So far so good. Apparently they are very strong, but you need to watch for oil leaks... you can see these in the forms of puddles on your drive, or acrid-smelling smoke coming from under the car, as fluid seeps onto the catalytic converters. If they lose drive at high milage, more often than not the fluid just requires changing and the fluid filter needs a clean. Catch that early when you start to feel clunky gear changes.
I've had two now, my frist developed the afore mentioned leak at 150,000 miles, or there about. My new one is on 56,000.
I'm relatively able-bodied, but as I suffer from FM, during cold damp weather especially, I need the auto to get anywhere easily.
I have a '96 Daihatsu Charade as well, as my "ecconomical daily runaround" (1.3l as opposed to 3.0l in the 605!) that's automatic... and that's actually quite nice. Other autos that I have driven and rate are the VW Passat, and the 407 Coupe's 6 speed. (Wish I could afford one of those!) In the past I also had an import Honda Prelude 2.2 vTec auto. That was brilliant. Lightning fast when pushed, and smooth, comfortable and ecconomical when driven sensibly. Kickdown always hit the vtec range, and on occasions when my back was playing up, hurt like hell!
I've also driven an auto focus, and like you, I thought it was rubbish. Not pushing past anything else, I found that the seats were uncomfortable (if you have any back problems at all, you'll know what I mean when I say it would be undrivable on occasions), the ride quality was below par, and I hate the hatchback look... But that's just me.
Hope this is of some value.
