Hello I'm looking to buy a 205gti in 1.6 or a 1.9 gti in the new year. I have had many fast classic and modern cars and earlier this year I went to the Nurburgring and the famous Stelvio Pass in Switzerland in my classic Porsche. A few weeks back I looked at a uncared for 1.9gti, but was amazed by the acceleration. I didn't buy the car as I want a well cared for car with lots of history etc etc. I have brought many books on the 205gti and they all say that that there isn't much difference between the 1.6 and the 1.9. Is this true and what version should I go for? Can anyone give me any tips or guidance as what one to buy. I'm new to the world of Peugeot and would value some help. Cheers Sean

I would go for the 1.9,it`s an upgraded 1.6.More horses, larger front brakes, discs on rear instead of drums, oil cooler, better trim.etc.Like all old cars, the important thing is how its been serviced and looked after.

i would echo what oldpug sayes, go for one that has a service history and that has been looked after, after all if it looks shabby, the odds are that its been neglected mechanically also read up as much as you can about the likily problem areas with GTI;s and go for the best you can afford in your price range , it wont necessary be the newest, after all an older car ,that has been looked after is a better bet than a newer car that has been thrashed and driven into the ground , good luck ,

the earlier cars are quite good at refusing the rust bug but the later ones circa 1990- 92, seam to atract it like wildflower. if your thinking these years then the places are the bottom of the rear quarters behind the rear doors which are normally full of filler, the bottom of the b posts inside the front doors. the door bottoms on the inside and the door fronts next to the hinges are really good rot places to. also make sure you lift up the rear seats as they love to rot around the top of the fuel tanks, this can be a really exspensive job to put right. the inner sills at the back next to the subframe mounts can go crusty to. other then that just make sure its been serviced well with no smoke on start up rattles etc. front suspension can rattle if even slightly worn, so check that aswell, if the seats rock then its a new seat frame and there dear, second hand ones are the same rocky seats so dont just think you can get away with that one!!

There is nothing wronge with a 1.6,and its quicker off the line than a 1.9 due to different ratio`s.Its just that a 1.9 is a much better 1.6.Also we omited the age old 205 problem,...rear radius arm bearings?

I can only say one thing, if you do lots of motorway miles , get a 1.9 , if you want a pure point to point blaster , get a 1.6. Though I will also admit that my 1.6 was effing slow on the 'ring!!
