speedo intermitenly drops to zero mph

hi. i own a w 2000 pug 405hdi exec and when im driving along the speedo just drops to zero mph, it was every now and then but now its virtually every day, does any body have any idea what the problem could be???

I think you mean a 406?? It will be the gearbox speed sensor.Its on the diff` by the R/H drive shaft,one plug and one screw, pull it out.
