I bought a '94 405 1.9TD estate 2 years ago and it was all over the road, so I fitted four new wishbone bushes (from the local motor factor) I made sure I fitted them at the correct angle (more or less) so they weren't under stress at normal suspension position. Within a year of normal driving, the rear 'P' bushes started to really move about and eventually (under 10,000 miles) they have completely broken up and the front wheels clonk backwards and fowards and the car is all over the road when you accellerate and decellerate as it once was.
Anyone else had this? Are there some known bad brands of parts, they were 'PEARL' make. The fronts are starting to crack too.
Do I have to go to Peugeot and buy originals at £30 a piece to avoid this happening again?
I noticed today the lower balljoint also has some slack and the LH rack end joint is really clonking too when I grab the road wheel and shake it. Whats involved in changing those two parts? Special tools required?

You can get O/E spec` parts from Euro car parts or GSF car parts,I think you have picked up crap rubber. The lower ball joint screws into the hub assembly, you will need a special socket to unscrew it and it will be very tight. If you "knock off" the track rod end, peal back the rack gaitor, the inner metal ball joint will unscrew from the rack with grips. You can get the complete track rod with gaitor and clips from the above parts co`.

Brill. Just picked up one original peugeot P bush and got the other side from Euro car parts, it was about a tenner.
Where can one find these special balljoint sockets? Also my engine seems to thud a bit fowards and backwards when I power on and off, what mount is likely to be the culprit here? Good car generally, not that great around town (heavy and rather sticky clutch) but lovely on motorway runs.

Try Euro or find a Sealey stockist.I got my one from Snap-on-Tools (garage tools only and very expensive). The big bush and bracket on the cylinder block down by the R/H drive shaft or the mounting on the R/H inner wing.A heavy stiff clutch is typical old 405.If you intend keeping this car for some time I would get it replaced or the plastic clutch cable link will snap.

get what replaced, the clutch? When I say stiff.. I'm used to Japanese cars, and they're usually hydraulic, so there's no latency if you see what I mean.

With these Peugeot`s the older the clutch gets the stiffer it gets,I`ve had them brake the lever on the gearbox!with a new clutch and cable the pedal will be like silk.

Thanks managed to change my rack end, and put new P bushes in , this time one bush from Euro Car Parts and one from Peugeot. Latest problem is now trackrod end taper has worn in the knuckle arm and I have had to pack it out with a strip of steel!
