Hi all, I am a new member a really need help. I own this Pug 406, 1.8 16V, 1749cc, 2001. I started my journey in Portugal and stopped in france to get some sleep, next day the car started OK but after 1 hour I could feel some intermmitent Hicups as I would release the accelarator pedal to mantain a speed limit and lack of power, sometimes I had to engage 3rd gear where normally it goes in 5th. The temperature gauge was normal but could feel also the engine bay very hot. Stopped in France and found a Peugeot dealer in Abbeville, told them what was happening and they offer to help me and plugged in the computer and it did not showed any fault as there weren't any faulty lights on dash. They told me it could be the catalytic converter clogged, and it had to wait until monday. I decide to drive the car and get back to London which I did but when I got here the car was barely moving, and the revs would not go more than 3500 RPM, I had to get in 2nd gear out of Dover hills, etc. and I did notice that it consumed a bit of engine oil compared to the trip i did to Portugal but not know if this is rellated to the fact the car got very hot. I took the car for a mechanic friend and he told me that it could be the cat convertor and probably the valve seals damaged and the cat got oil from engine and also got damaged, it never consumed any more oil than it should , 250ml a trip of 2200kms at 90-100 miles an hour. I am concern if I should take the car to a peugeot dealer or have my friend to repair it. Any help. Thanks

I`ve had blocked cats on 406`s and the exhaust manifold was glowing!A cat at a dealer will cost about £500++! get your mec` to find a good OE part for 1/2 that. There are a lot of very cheap cats on the market but they only last 1yr if your lucky.Dont worry about oil consumption just give it a chemical flush with Forte and change oil & filter.
