I have a 1991 405 that has turned out to be an absolute money pit. I have a problem with the brake servo. The brakes are much harder to apply than they should and I've been told by my mechanic that I need a new one. I can't afford a new one at around £200 and am struggling to find one in a breaker's over here. Is the same servo used on any other Peugeot's so that I stand a better chance of finding a used one? Thanks, Paul

No,only use a 405 one,any year, any model.By the way is your 405 a diesel??if so it will may be the vacuum pump in trouble.

its on the gearbox end of the engine at the top, its belt driven off the camshaft. take the pipe off it that goes to the servo and check to see if its drawing enough vacum.

The mechanic said there wasn't a lot of vacuum in the pipe. Is this an easier and cheaper job than replacing the servo? Thanks, Paul

No,as before find one from a 405 or a Citreon BX which has the same engine.Normally the diaphragm in the pump gets perforated,if you can get a new one its a simple job to replace it.You do not even have to remove the pump, just a few screws and take the top off.

Yes,I used to get a repair kit from a Peugeot Dealer but that was years ago.If they are still available from Peugeot you may find them very expensive, so a complete pump from a factor more cost effective ??

My mechanic said a recon pump will be around £200!!!!!!! so I'll have to bide my time until I can find one in a breaker's or take a risk and buy a used one off ebay and hope it's ok. Unless anyone on here has one that that is guaranteed to work and would post it out,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Paul

Couldn't find a used belt driven pump anywhere over here but a recent Hungarian friend owns a car spares shop and managed to source me a rubber diaphragm kit for 1200huf (£4). Dirt cheap and dead eay to fit.
