Hello my 1993 1.8 205 TD was fitted with the optional transponder operated central locking and starter immobiliser, but the transponder is long lost. The immobiliser sometimes operates at random so that the engine cannot be started. Turning the key to start dims the warning lights, a relay clicks and nothing else happens. After many attempts the immobiliser suddenly gives up and the engine starts. This hot weather seems to make the problem worse, and I have tried to locate the immobiliser to remove it or to by pass the wiring. One of the experts on this forum suggested that the immobiliser is located behind the glove box. Another person found his immobiliser under the carpeting. It is a right pain in the butt! Anyone else had this problem and if so where did they find the pesky immobiliser?

I think your problem is a "dead spot" on the starter motor and nothing to do with an immobilser.

Thanks for reply. It might be the starter motor, but this is nearly new (2 years old) and the engine starts when I use the jump lead from the battery to the starter solenoid. Old starter motors had a square drive on the end so they could be turned past a dead spot. This one has a cover over the drive, so can't be turned. Guess I will just have to remove the starter motor and get it checked out.

Well it's not the starter motor. Took it off and had it cleaned and checked, perfectly ok. Took off the heater plugs control unit and cleaned all the terminals. Put everything back and after a successful start drove into town. Next time I tried to start, back came the same fault. This time I used a jump lead from the battery to the starter solenoid. The starter turned fine but the engine would not start, since the fuel cut-off solenoid was not energised. Somewhere there is an immobiliser which cuts out the starter solenoid and the fuel cut-off solenoid. This has become a real pain in the butt!!!

Fixed it at last! Removed the glove box, then took out the fuse box. Right up behind the fuse box is a chassis earth socket with lots of green wires going in. This earth socket was loose and when tightened up everything came good, including the immobiliser warning light. The Haynes circuit diagram shows this earthing point is used for many systems including the fuel cut-off. Just got to put everything back together again now.

Would you believe it! The same starting fault is back again. The Haynes manual simply says "immobiliser faults should be taken to a Peugeot dealer." The Haynes circuit diagram shows only the bog standard 205 diesel wiring, not the turbo which has electrics more like a GTI. Does anyone have a 1.8 turbo diesel circuit diagram showing the wiring for the immobiliser? And does anyone know where the immobiliser is located and what it looks like? I don't want to take out all the fascia etc, and then find that the immobiliser is in some other place. Thanks for any help.

your gonna have to find the unit and remove it, or give the fuel solenoid another ignition feed, and run another wire from the switch to the starter, i know which one i would do.

I found another main earth point from the battery to the car body, in addition to the gear box earth cable. Not shown on the 205 circuit diagram, but similar to the 309 diagram in Haynes. Took it apart and cleaned the terminals which were corroded. (When I fixed the first earth fault the immobiliser warning light began to flash and the starting fault became worse.) Now that I have cleaned up the second & bigger earth wires the immobiliser light has gone out and so far the car starts as normal. Fingers crossed!! perhaps I don't have to take the whole fascia apart after all.
