I'm new to the forum and have joined because I'm considering buying a fairly tidy 505 GTI. I am having real difficulty finding out much about the 505....it appears to be a bit of a forgotten car! Everything works on the car and it has no rust (other than a spot next to the sunroof). What can anyone tell me to help me? Reliability, weak spots, common problems...anything! ;D

truely the 505 is a forgotten gem and the Gti doubly so. It is a very stylish, very comfortable car, with a surprising amount of handling and go! I love them.
They do rust if not looked after but no more than other cars of the era. The drive train is pretty well bullet proof, although one major weakness is the suspension strut tops which can rust out and be difficult to find in good condition since every other 505 has rusted ones too!
Interior trim can be a bit weak, but other than that - great great cars. The last of the "proper" Peugeots.

I've only ever driven a series 2, ('87) and can't vouch for series 1 cars so......... Only my opinion, but to me they seem to avoid the dreaded rust a wee bit better than most cars of a similar age, but I agree the strut tops do rust - not the strut mounts, but where the actual spring sits in the strut. Have a GOOD look. You may need to find a creative welder who is good at disguising his handiwork! Be wary of the sunroof, the plastic outer cover to the cable seems to become fragile with age (don't we all) and repairing / even getting at it is an absolute pain. The corners of the sunroof tray (the thing with the sliders) are prone to rust, but without whipping out the headlining you can't tell. Can be a little thirsty but other than that, they're bloody good cars, handle great, very little body roll, (find some good bends or roundabouts on your test-drive and see for yourself - you'll be pleasantly surprised) very comfy, quick enough, and they feel solid, like they'll last for ever. Look after it and it probably will! If I sound like a fan of them, that's 'cos I am. Pity I took mine apart to use as a donor for errm, something..............Still, ne'er mind there's plenty left - not. I read somewhere there are only 77 505 gtis left in GB. Go on, buy it. It'll be the best £££££s you've ever spent.
Good luck,
Mike.

Thanks for the replies, I need it to be my daily driver so reliability would be an issue, but I am a competent amateur mechanic and it has been looked after. How easy are spares to get? The rear springs look a little 'saggy' and I may need it to tow a couple of times a year? Are body panels still available? What PCD are the wheels if I wanted a nice set of (period) 5 spokes?
