Hi there, I have been working like crazy on my 504 Cabriolet sorting out all the problems inherited from previous owner. Latest was initial ignition advance of 30 degrees No wonder it pinked going uphill Just a quick question which I hope is not too silly. How do you change the fan/water pump belt as there is no alternator to slacken off and no idler pulley? The car has two belts, one for alternator and one for fan/water pump. As far as I can see neither the crakshaft pulley or the water pump pulley can be moved ;D Haynes manual does not mention changing this belt. Any help would be greatly appreciated Jonathan

This is like some of the 404 KF2 Injection cars. Put the belt over the water pump pulley and then line it up on the appropriate groove of the crank pulley. Then, using a wrench to grab the crank pulley nut, turn the crank over enough to get the rest of the belt into the groove. Don't use a screwdriver!

Hi Mike Many thanks for this help I had guessed that this might be the only way but wanted confirmation from somebody more experienced. It does seem rather crude and Un-Peugeot though ;D I will leave the screwdriver in the tool-chest I admit I was tempted best regards Jonathan

You may have to do it one groove at a time - on the 404 KF2 early version, the outer crank pulley groove is for the alternator, so as I recall it was not really possible to get the belt to jump right onto the second groove nearest the timing chain cover! Best of luck.
