205GTi 1993 (1.9)
Just a quickie.... My niece has a 205GTi, and had a brand new battery fitted. 1 week later, she was sat in traffic for about 10mins, when the engine cut out. She left it to cool down for about 10mins, and was able to re start the car, but only to have the engine cut out again after 2 - 3 mins driving. There was no warning of the engine about to die. The car was recovered and towed to a garage, where they diagnosed a 'defective' battery which caused damage to the alternator. She was told to take the battery back for refund\exchange, and had another battery and new alternator fitted at a cost of 430Euros (inc recovery).
Now, question is: Is this scenario possible, and also would the engine cut out if the battery had 'given up', (and\or the alternator too)? I'm thinking electric fuel pump stopping etc.... due to the above.
Car is up to now, running ok.
Thanks guys

Yes, a duff battery can damage an alternator.
If the battery and alternator were both sufficiently mullered, then the engine could indeed cut out as there wouldn't be enough current to charge to coil and make a spark. I haven't done the maths but I think a fuel pump would run on a lot less current than the minimum required to charge the coil.
