i have just bought a 97 peugeot 406. paid £140 for mint condition with tax/mot and runs well so am a happy man. checking it over (and i'm not a mechanic) the auxillary belt which drives water pump, alternator etc is splitting on edges. what sort of price am i looking at for parts, if get garage to do it and my final question, i am still using car if this snaps what damage will it do? thanks for your help

We are talking about the belt you can see under the bonnet? This auxiliary belt does not drive the water pump,the cam belt does and you have to remove timing covers to see it.If aux belt snaps the power steering stops working and the alternator will stop charging the battery,the A/C will stop working (if fitted).I have known the debris from a shredded belt to get into the timing cover and cause the cambelt to fail,so get it replaced.Simple job,£18 for a belt and 30mins labour for a mechanic who has done one before.The pulleys and tensioner will have to be checked when doing the job.
