Starter motor has been playing up on my 304 cabriolet so took it off and had it sorted professionally. Put it back on and all seemed well, turning over ok. Finished putting carbs back on etc and started her up. Cloud of white smoke from the exhaust and conked out. Starter will now only turn her over a little before the engine seems to jam up. One of the plugs was covered in oil as if it had been dunked in it! Doesn't sound good does it?! The car has been outside in all the bad weather though did have antifreeze in it.

As you say doesn`t sound good! First thing find out if the engine is "locking up" by turning it over by hand, with all plugs removed. If it is then that`s bad news, head off etc to find out why,has it "swallowed" something after removing carb`or manifold?? "that`s where the missing nut is,he says".If it turns over OK then it may be something stupid like swallowing a load of oil or crap petrol?? Best of luck.

OK I've figured it out. When I reconnected the inlet manifold I connected the water pipe to the servo take off, therefore filling the engine up with water! Hope it hasn't done any damage due to hydraulic lock but unfortunately I can't find out as the ruddy starter motor has packed up again. D'oh!!!!! I think the oil on one plug was just sitting in the plug hole due to slight leak from rocker gasket.

They're quite a robust engine but if you've bent a rod then I've got a spare lump for sale if needed.

What are you??!! they also can crack a liner! all you can do is drain and flush the engine, spin it over with the plugs out.If it starts and runs OK,fingers crossed. If its got bent rods it will struggle to start and run like a dog.If its got a cracked liner you will get symptoms like a blown head gasket.

Ok, new starter motor arrived and fitted. It all runs fine now but there is a LOT of steam coming from exhaust! Level in rad doesn't seem to be going down and oils is still clean so please tell me this is just likely to be water in the exhaust pipe and will eventually dissappear! What would be symptoms of cracked liner?

It sounds to be fine. A cracked liner or leaking seal would cause the cooling system to pressurise. Excess whit smoke will be as you said, water in the exhaust and silencers. That should disappear after a while. Just keep an eye on the water level.

As Dave said, they are a robust engine, lots of heavy metal unlike to-days light weights.Give it a good long run to dry out the exhaust etc and keep a check on the water level and temp`.May be a good idea to flush the engine and change the oil and filter. Lucky Man.
