My 205 Sceptre TD now has its heater fan stuck on full blast. Turning the control knob/dial has no effect whatsoever. This only started last night. I use the car daily and have done so for the last 3 years! This never happened before.
What could this be?
I have sprayed a load of WD40 in/over the "knobs/dials" area so to speak and also taken the panel off to examine it a bit and sprayed some more WD40 on it. No result so far...
Any advise out there?...

It will be the heater rheostat. You will find it down in the N/S foot well, held into the back of the heater by two small screws.Remove the multiplug and screws and it slides out of the casing.

Cheers for both your replies!
Sounds easy(ish) to fix. Get new rheostat, take old one out, fit new one, right?
I am a bit worried about the actual fan though as it has been on full blast for over 550 miles now! Yesterday on a long journey it started to make a hell of a noise! Sounded like I was in one of those old propeller motor planes! I actually pulled over on the hard shoulder to make sure it wasn't something else! After about half an hour it quieted down and now omits the occasional squeak. So, what do you reckon? Shall I replace the fan too?
Thanks again oldpug and frank.

The fan motor may be OK? Its above your head when your in the footwell removing the rheostat. Its probably full of leaves and "bits" and very easy to remove,3 small screws and a wire and down it drops.Blow out all the debris,WD40 the bearings and I bet it will be silent. The rheostat and a blower motor are expensive at Peugeot Dealers so if you have a Euro or GSF near to you they sell them at half the price.

Cheers oldpug.
I shall try and clean/lube the fan motor.
I have so far managed to locate and remove the rheostat. (I did have to turn into a human snake and rest the back of my head in the foot well though!) So at least I can drive in a bit of silence now.
Anyway, couldn't find a rheostat on GSF or Euro Car Parts website (I may phone them tomorrow).
However, did find new one on eBay for £45. Would that be a fair price?
Also, I may go to a car breakers to see if they have any. Or is this a bad idea for a rheostat?

Long time since I got one of these, £45 is a bit on the high side but if it is the correct part and includes delivery get it.If I remember GSF & Euro call it a resistor or something else.Being a strange part on an old car take it with you and "ask for one of these".As for 2nd hand, you pay and take a chance, its works or it does not.

GSF call it a "heater resistor" indeed. Thanks oldpug! (nothing wrong with your memory! ) They are supposed to sell the 4-pin and 5-pin one. The one I took out of my car was a 4-pin one, hence ordered that one. Bad news. No longer available at GSF. I have looked at the plug that goes into the rheostat and it actually has 5 sockets and wires coming from all of them. So, my question today is: Would the 5-pin rheostat work? Not sure if I can get that one from GSF, but the one I saw on eBay is a 5-pin one. So, not all hope is lost! Anyway, may end up going to the scrappy to get one, although I'd rather not. O yeah, took the fan out, cleaned it (not that dirty/clogged up really), sprayed it with GT85 (nicer smell than WD40! ), put it back in. Seems ok. In any case, I can sort of live with the problem for the time being. I just keep plugging/unplugging the rheostat in the foot-well to have the fan at full blast or no fan at all! ;D

Dont know As I`ve never tried to swop 5-4 etc, find a second hand one and try it. Have you tried Euro car parts or found out how much they they are at Peugeot Dealers? I`m sure there are plenty available in the UK.

Good news. The answer is yes, a 5-pin rheostat does work. At least in mine.
Bought a new one a few weeks ago on eBay, as GSF also did no longer stock this one. Quite pricey (£48, incl P&P) for what it is though. But no matter it has been working fine.
The fan is another matter though. No matter how much WD40/GT85 it gets sprayed on it, it remains very, very noisy. I'm surprised it hasn't actually died yet. I'm awaiting delivery of a second hand one I won on eBay as the cheapest price for a new one I found is £75!! Insane for a motor and a bit of plastic...
