Hi folks. I'm another newbie, with a problem 406, newly joining the fleet of 106 and 205. The 406 is a 2003 2 litre HDi 110, only 118,000 miles, runs very well except it's returning 40mpg when I'd expect 50 plus after looking at the road test data. Can anyone tell me what I should check and fix?

after 100k they do drop economy badly, id start by giving it a dam good servire if it hasnt already have one. ie- eninge oil and filter and fuel and air filters, checking the brakes are working properly and not sticking, all add up to poor fuel econonmy. but to be fair you would be lucky to get 50 mpg, big heavy car and depends on how you drive it.

Having owned one, I can confirm the wisdom of Franks words. I'm a notoriously gentle driver (even my Mum moans how slow I am) and could only squeak mine past 50MPG in mixed motoring, although on a disciplined 60MPH motorway run would get it higher.

Thanks folks. I was beginning to think I had something seriously wrong. Elsewhere, I had the tip to put a container of diesel/injector/valve treatment in the tank and give it a good zap. I do wonder if the injectors are as efficient as they should be. And I take the point that poor filters will have their effect. I'll try everything, because I like the car a lot, and have just fitted a towbar and roof bars for practicality, and now want it to top 200,000.
