Hi Guys,
I¡¦m a proud new owner of a 2010 (10 plate) Peugeot 207 1.4 VTI Sport petrol, with less than 6,000 miles on the clock and I am very happy with it (I like the all the toys that you get with as standardƒº). I have noticed a few things though and being a new 207 owner and never having owned a Peugeot before, I don¡¦t know if they are normal or not, so I hoping that you guys will steer me in the right direction.
I¡¦ve noticed a tapping noise coming from the engine, now I don¡¦t know if this is the normal engine noise of the 207 or there is something abnormal. I can just about hear this tapping, while I am stopped at traffic lights for example with the window closed and when I park the car and leave the engine running and get out it¡¦s very noticeable.
Also when I start the engine and let it idle for a while I can hear a click noise every so often, when I rev the engine it seems to disappear for a while then it comes back. I¡¦m just wonder what this noise could be?
When driving to work, which is approx 12 miles from where I live. I¡¦m averaging 29 mpg at an average speed of 12 mph. As it only a 1.4L I thought the fuel consumption would be better than my 1.6L R reg escort, but it seems the same if not a little worse. Do you think this mpg I¡¦m getting is about right.
Any advice that you could give would be appreciated very much, as I don¡¦t want to take the car to the dealer to sort if it¡¦s normal and I look like a complete wally
TIA

Greetings, and welcome! So you took the plunge!
OK, the engine is fairly refined, but there is a bit of injector tapping but this will ease with revs as the taps move closer together.
Not sure about the click noise, poss the A/C buzzing in and out?
On a run with a disciplined right foot expect to peak at mid 40's MPG, maybe a touch higher. Even on the longest most boring 60MPH motorway runs I couldn't get it up to 50MPG no matter how tightly I clenched my buttocks. It's heavier and as powerful as the olde 'scort (unless you had one of the hotter ones) so don't expect too much different. In genuine mixed motoring expect mid to high 30's. It's not bad, but it's high output for a 1.4 and a heavy machine.

Thanks for the answers,
So the tapping I'm hearing is normal for the VTi engine?
Yeah, I just had a boring 1.6 LX Escort, a full take use to last me approx 2 weeks (approx 200 miles), so I'm most likely looking at the same from the Pug, although the trip computer say 260 odd miles on the currently fuel, and the fuel guage is just one notch above half full, so it will be intresting to see how much I get out of it. If I trip computer is right and I get another 260 miles from it, I'll be well happy.
The click noise is a mistery, I don't think it's the Air Con as I don't have it on.
TIA

Yes, provided it's just light tapping and not full-on knocking or rattling, then it's fine.
Not sure about the clicky noise then if it's not the A/C? I'd need to see/hear it to make a better guess.
Now you've bought the car it's worth paying to join the club. Apart from the various meets and events, you get offers and discounts from all sorts or places, and proper access to the 07 Series Registrar, who is an extraordinarily handsome chap.

Thanks for all the help.
I will defo join the Club.
The ticking noise that I'm hearing from the engine appears when the car is noticable when the car has stopped and the engine is idling and is notice able from inside the car with the window closed and also when I get out and stand over the bonnet. If I move away from the bonnet by a few yards, it isn't noticable. Do you just think that I'm being over sensitive?
TIA

You shouldn't be able to hear it inside the car when idling. Should be all but silent idling a warm engine.
Difficult to say from here though - if in doubt, ask the dealers to fire up another used 207 1.4 valver for you to listen to.

Admittedly I can only hear this ticking within the car with the radio and fans switched off, but I can definately hear it. So what your saying is that the engine should be completely quite from within the car?

TBH, I never paid a huge amount of attention, but I seem to recall that in normal use ?(ie, fan on I or II, radio on quietly etc) I couldn't hear the motor on idle. Like I say, drive it back and compare it to another if you're concerned, but also check that it had decent oil when they serviced it prior to sale, and not the generic Motaquip or Fina that a lot of pug dealers use in bulk.

Thanks for all the replies. It's put my mind at rest.
The only other thing I'm concerned about is the petrol consumption. Is there any advice for getting my MPG higher than the 29 MPH I getting now. Or is this about right?

I don't think you'll better that by a tremendous amount in an urban environment.
Some say the on board computers don't give a truly accurate measure, because below a certain speed the fuel flow is too low to accurately measure, so the meter shuts down and displays "----" even though the car is still moving, so the displayed figure at the end of a tank is less than reality. With this in mind you'd probably be wise to double check this by doing your own MPG calculations at each fill up, as it may return a higher figure.

Hi,
Well I filled my car up on 15/03, done 110 miles now today, the fuel guage is saying I have half a tank. As the tank holds 50 litres, that means I have 25 litres left. By my calculations that's about 20 mpg!!! This seems very excessive for a 1.4 litre car.
What do you guys think?

Don't trust the gauge to indicate what half a tank is. It's a non-linear indication.
