I could do with a bit of help with my 205 xs
I've put a new alternator on and battery as the old ones were dead, the alternator is pumping out 12.7v but my battery light is slightly glowing and gets brighter if I put the heaters on or my lights, I've checked the connections and they seem fine and the earth on the gearbox ... Any ideas?

Oh I also forgot to ask what the smaller wire going to the alternator does? Because this wasn't attached to my old one, I had to find the wire and re crimp it!!

The alternator should be charging at 3.8 - 14.1 volts or there abouts, i would check all coctions are clean and tight. Remove all the conections and clean them up with some sand paper and refit. also make sure the belt is tight enough. The small wire is for the light on the dash

Your old alternator may not be toast. It will not work with the small wire disconnected, hence the flat battery. This is the wire to the warning light. An alternator has no permanent magnet, so it needs a small current flow through the warning light to get the magnetism going in the field coils and generate full output. When the alternator is up to speed and generating current, the voltage on both sides of the warning light is the same, so no more current flow through the bulb and the light goes out.
