Could be either. Even the engine mountings can cause it if they are knackered.

Yep, I confirm. Similar thing happened to me in my 305: each time I engaged reverse gear, there was like a jump from the engine (car did not jump out of gear though) and it was due to a badly worn (or was it missing?) engine mounting.

Being a 304 its all integral with the gearbox in the "sump". As suggested go over all the simple external stuff first. It must be 25yrs since I last had one of these boxes to bits its a mamouth job. I seem to remember this was caused by the internal selector fork wearing away. Right at the back of the box where the linkage fits is the selector housing.I think this can be removed insitu and I`m getting memories of selector balls and springs and levers etc ?? so try this last,if all else fails and if you do pull it apart be careful not to loose the balls or springs.

Sounds like it was partly seized up linkage ?? use it more and spray WD40 all over the linkage to help it on its way, good luck.

I had a 305 once with the same gearbox (similar anyway). On mine the plastic buses at the base of the gear lever wore out which made it difficult to get all of the gears.
