just had a full service done on my 2000 306 2.0 hdi, all was fine untill yesterday when i gained a low pitched humming noise, it only does it when the engine is warm, turn the ignition on and it humms for around 4-5 secs then stops, start the car and it starts humming again but not as loud? :S i popped the bonnet... turns out the noise is comming from the fuel filter, guy who serviced it had a look and seems to think its the non return valve in the filter housing chattering but isnt sure, any1else have any ideas? also he wants £160 for new rear pads and discs inc vat and fitted. and £75 for a new track rod end inc vat and fitting along with it being retracked? as far as i knew you didnt have to retrack a car just for a track rod end? does any1 else think this is overpriced? please help. thanks

£160 for pads & discs is about right, provided they are quality O/E parts and the price DOES include labour and VAT. 2 Discs £50,pads £25 1hr labour £50-£65 + VAT.If you replace a track rod end the tracking will have to be adjusted.T/rod end £15,1hr labour + Vat.So your man while not cheap is about right and a lot cheaper than a Dealer. As for the humming fuel filter, very difficult to comment. As he did a full service the fuel filer should have been replaced, ask him to open it up again to see if all is well. There are a number of different types of filters, the early type has a spring ring inside the housing holding the element down,if this is left out may be it will make a noise.??

It is not uncommon for the fuel filter housing to make a humming noise after a non gen filter has been fitted, my own 306 hdi does it. The only way to stop it is to replace the filter with a gen filter, and then if it doesnt cure that a complete new filter and housing. Hence the reason why mine still has the humming noise!!! lol
