Hi There fellow Peugeot owners. I am trying to source the correct differential oil in my 1970 404. Apparently it needs to be vegetable based. The workshop manual mentions two pints of Esso GP 90.
This is totally unavailable in South Africa. Please could you advice what should be a replacement, or has anyone details where I can obtain 2- 3 pints? KInd regards Graham

This is an age old delema for 404 owners. First thing is what rear axle does your 404 have?? I`m not sure what a South African 404 pick up had in 1970.?? Early 404`s had bronze worm and wheel rear axles which ran with "Vegy" oil and later models had Hypoid axles with normal EP oil. Now, if ever those two oils are mixed it "reacts", ends up like sponge rubber so would not do the axle any good.Second,If it has got the old worm and wheel axle, has it still got "vegy" oil in it?? If the old axle was completely and thoroughly cleaned of every trace of "veg" oil you can run it with normal EP oil. If it is the old axle I would be surprised if it still has veg oil in it.It is very difficult to find and if you do find some it may be old and useless as it goes off like food.

If it's worm drive (driveshaft enters rear end below centreline of crownwheel) then you can safely use Castrol R40, which suits the purpose well. If you are unsure of what was in a worm drive unit before, flush it first with a mixture of oil thinner and alcohol.
EP oils will kill the bronze in any worm diff in a very short time, never use extreme pressure lubricants.

I`ve always been led to believe that it is OK to use non veg` oil in the old worm & wheel diffs provided that every trace of the old veg` oil has been cleaned out,not a drip left!Everyone tells me veg oil is not produced in Europe anymore. Is R40 veg oil? Esso say when the veg`gear oil VT is not available use gear oil GP90 or GX 80/90 AFTER!! the unit has been washed out and never mix the two.So that means its not a veg` oil.

Don't believe the owner's manuals! Every 404 sold in Canada and the USA had straight mineral gear oil in their worm diffs and they wore out prematurely (pitting on drive side of crown wheel).
R40 is a castor-based oil (huile de ricin in French) - castor beans. R40 was a straight equivalent to Esso Gear Oil VT and Mobilube P.
