typically just as its getting cold and needs anti-freeze my car has started to lose water, sympoms are getting bubbles in the expansion tank, car never overheats just dumps the water in the expansion tank, there is no water in the oil or oil in the water in fact the water is clear as,no nasty smells from the bubbles etc so at first would have suspected the head gasket but car starts and runs fine no missing no water or steam from the exhaust, gauge sits rock solid except in traffic where it rises slightly as expected, been told the head gaskets never go on these 2.0hdi 90hp 8v engine but have been told probably water pump but cant work out why it would introduce bubbles into the coolant water is going somewhere but not out of the cap,no puddles under the car everywhere is as dry as a bone, but soooo fed up with it beeping at me,any ideas!!! cheers

As said head gasket is a very rare job on that engine so don't concern your self about a few bubbles in the header tank? If the engine IS? loosing water it will only go two ways,on the floor or out of the exhaust pipe.Get it pressure tested,go round the rad, hoses, back of the block etc etc and inside the car!(heater matrix) to rule out external leaks. The water pump can be a difficult and frustrating item to identify as the cause of the leak. They may only leak when driving or occasionally when switched off.I had one recently where I pressure tested it,ran it for ages,no sign of a leak any where?? Left it to cool down for an hour, and noticed a drip from the timing cover.

Check the bottom corners of the rad, had loads leak from there, but only when hot,
