After eventually facing up to the fact that my Merc E240 estate was spending more time in petrol stations than on the road (overall MPG of 25!), I've bitten the bullet and traded it in for an '02 406 HDI (90) estate (I owned an early 406 diesel several years ago so I'm not entirely new to the make). On paper I should have halved my fuel bills overnight (half the BHP too which is VERY obvious when on the road!) and hopefully it'll prove to be as reliable as Peugeot diesels are renowned for. It has thrown up a few questions though which I hope someone can assist with;
Online research shows that the 90 BHP model differs from the 110 by an absence of intercooler and electronically controlled turbo? I was wondering whether a "chip" could give me an extra 20 - 30 BHP? It needs to be cheap and not effect the reliability. Any thoughts?
For the first 2 mins after starting this morning (very cold) the power steering wasn't working. I'll check the fluid level tonight but wondered whether this is a common issue?
The dash display for the audio is very dim (dimmer adjusted to max) but the heating controls display below is bright. Can this be improved or might I need a new upper screen?
Finally, the key fob buttons are broken and I can only lock / unlock manually. I know that replacements for the rubber buttons are available on eBay but given that the circuits are exposed I suspect they're damaged too. Is getting a replacement key fob costly?
I'm hoping someone can help with the above.
