Hi,
I am thinking about fitting new front shocks to my 504. Whilst Haynes "comic" suggests leaving it to my Peugeot dealer (yeah as if they want to know...), and Autobooks devoting a whole chapter to the matter - what I need to know is it as complicated as Autobooks make out.
I know these are not the normal modern struts, but inserts (already have them an ebay deal), do I need the special tools, or am I doomed to fail.
The old girl doesnt ride too bad, but sometimes can be heard to weeze a little with a bit of bouncing up and down in the driveway.
thanks Mat.

The hardest part is the springs. You will need a set of decent (i.e. not Halfords £2.99) spring clamps. When spring clamps go bad is not a comedy moment, you can loose an arm!
Other than that it's straightforward but can be a bit of a pain. Your local man in a shed can probably do it for around £50.

Hi mat, the springs really are a pain if you're not used to them but 504 front shocks are a bit strange!! The actual shock is an insert inside the upright and from memory there's a tricky "piston ring" at the bottom and then you have to fill the thing up with specific oil. Your local dealer may not be keen to do the job but they should be able to give you the info you need, if not i'll try and dig it out, best of luck!!

Hi Andy
I already have the inserts £20 a pair NOS on ebay. The autobooks 504 manual describes removing them using special "Peugeot" tools. What I cant puzzle out from looking at the strut is how does it come away from the hub itself? or does the whole lot have to come out? It is not bolted in like a modern type. I can't recall if the pickup truck I looked at in the scrappy was like it, but I do recall they had different calipers.
The inserts themself look simple enough although these are sealed units, a modication for non OEM I would guess. They have a small cup affair on the bottom, and then the normal pistion screw/bolt on the other end. I can see how they bolt to the inner wing plate but how they fix within the strut who knows? I can only think its the weight of the car keeping the two compressed.
Mat.

The whole hub/stub axle is part of the strut so it all has to come off, leave the calliper hanging on it's hose. Once you've got the spring off there's a collar that screws on to the strut to hold the insert in, there is a special tool to undo it but you could get away with out it.
hope this helps! Andy
