I recently acquired a new old stock Marchal left headlight as part of a job lot of 304 spares but I'm not sure whether the unit is for UK cars. I did the obvious thing of fitting a bulb and shining the light against a wall but the result was inconclusive, i.e. no obvious dipped beam cut off one way or the other.
The label attached to the back of the reflector shows the unit as being a 61246603 G; does that reference mean anything to anyone?
Thanks in anticipation of your thoughts on this.

On mine there is a rocker switch on the top of the lamp unit that alters the angle of the bulb. This changes it from left hand to right hand.
Hope that helps.

Hello and thank you Dave45.
I've had a chance to look into things a bit further now; I removed one of the headlights from the car and discovered it has separate bulbs for dipped and main beam - and the beam direction switch you mentioned. The new unit is designed to take a single, dual-filament H4 bulb and has no LH/RH adjustment, only the lever to compensate for a heavy load.
I've just fitted it to the car and will see what sort of beam pattern is apparent on that side tonight. The only H4 bulbs I've got to hand are the standard 60/55W type but the original headlights are 45/40W so there's more current being drawn now (up by a third to 5A, I think); I wonder whether the wiring is up to it.

Although I couldn't get a clear beam pattern when I held the headlamp in my hand, fitting it to the car revealed that the unit is definitely for continental use - one for eBay France, I think!

Check on the back of the lamp unit where the bulb fits in. There should be a switch that alters the position of the bulb. That will change it from lhd to rhd beam pattern. The bulb only moves about 10 degrees or so. If you're stuck I can pop a headlamp out of mine and post a photo if you like. My lamps are the single bulb type.

Thank you Dave45. I've taken a photo of the back of the unit - now let's see if I can manage to attach it (I'm a bit of a duffer when it comes to computers). Attachments:
