The flexible steering coupling on many 04 series cars is a rubber/plastic disc about 2 inches wide. It couples the steering rack to the steering column shaft.
Over time this disc perishes, and will fail leaving you with a dangerous car and an MOT failure.
I have now experienced this part replacement on my 504 and 104. Both cars employ exactly the same part and in general are easy to replace.
504 - this coupling connects the two parts in place by 4 hex bolts and nuts, you will need the correct sized allen key and suitable socket/spanner. Be sure to apply plenty of WD40 and let it soak in. Remove the 4 hex bolts, two each side. The disc will simply slide out and can be relaced. Often bolts seize and the hex can round off, so you might have to take the angle grinder to the bolts. Be warned, its close to the steering gaiters and you dont want to be making a hole in that!!
104 - At first glance, this looks the same as the 504 but on 104 the original factory fitment doesnt use the hex bolts, they are rivited. This means it cannot be simply removed like the 504. There are two adaptors which sit on the end of both the steering rack and steering column (the bits that physically bolt to the coupling). These are held on to the shaft each with a pinch bolt. Remove these bolts, again applying a good amount of WD40. OK - now ignore the Haynes manual which tells you to remove the steering rack and gear linkage, lets make it much easier. Go in to the cabin, and remove the steering column plastic cover. Undo the 4 bolts and drop down the steering column, be carefull not to strain the wires, rest the wheel on the seat. Go back under the car, you will have room now to lever the clamps off the splines of the column and rack. Remove the 3 pieces in one lot. You now need to cut off the old rivits holding the coupling, this can be done with the grinder. Once you have the two clamps free clean them up and find yourself a set of round head hex bolts and nuts. Some replacement kits come with them. Re assemble checking the steering wheel position before tightening everything up. Reassmble the cabin. If you have to change the coupling at a later time, you can now just follow the 504 instructions.
Parts - Peugeot don't seem to carry the part any longer. Peugeot specialists may have them, but if you are in need of one the same day like me when mine failed the MOT head along to your local Citroen dealer, the part is identical on the Citroen BX. German Swedish and French also stock this part.
