I have two 1973 504 GL automatic saloons. The one I bought privately, which needed a lot of work (rust!) cost me £485 (45,000 miles). The one I bought through the club, which is in superb condition, cost £1,250 (65,000 miles). A more recent estate was advertised on e-bay recently for £950.
I believe that in Peugeot parlance GR denotes a higher level of trim than GL - but I doubt that the differences are significant. I had an L model with the 1800 cc engine, and that was just as wonderful as the GL models (I've had five 504s altogether). By modern standards they're thirsty - need a higher top gear for motorway cruising - and could do with power steering. But still, in my opinion, one of the best cars ever produced by Peugeot or anybody else. If you have one you're happy with - enjoy it, realise how lucky you are, and don't worry about the small differences between models.
Hope this helps!

Glad to hear that the club managed to help out by supplying you with a minty 504 504fan. Are you a member btw? Do you have a pic of the car as it probably has a history with cpuk and it would be interesting to see whose car you bought.

Yep - CPUK member for about seven years. The 504 I bought through the club came from Michael Gould, who's a marine engineer by profession, and extremely knowledgeable about cars. Michael had known the previous owner; the car had always been garaged - hence the excellent condition. My mechanics once had occasion to check the tappet settings, and reported them "spot on" - a tribute to Michael's maintenance I'm sure. Registration number is UAR 504 M - though apparently that's accidental! I do have a photograph, but TIME to scan and send it in is the problem. I will try . . . What does "First past the post" mean in this forum? Two further thoughts for shanmugalingam: 1. If you're new to the 504, be aware that if you push a front seat right forward, the back folds down level with the rear seat - making the car a superb load carrier. A friend often collected grandfather clocks in his. 2. If you haven't done so aready, do visit www.504.org for lots of 504 information, including test reports and photos from all over the world.

What does "First past the post" mean in this forum? It's an indicator of how many times you have posted on the forum. As moderator I can set the forum to change your status when you clock up a set number of posts. The forum has a cpuk member flag which I have changed your avatar to. It is supposed to encourage non members to joina dn to help us see how many members use the forum. Iy's not compulsory and you can remove it if you want.

hi! i recently bought a 504 GR. after buying it i saw an advert for 504 GL. Can any one advice me that which one is better. Also what is their price range in U.K. thanks for the help. ::) Hello Shanmugalingam, about your question on the GL and GR models: I know that on the continent(and in UK) Peugeot sold the 504 petrol in 3 versions for most of its life. # A 1800 L version with slightly lower spec and a difference in rear suspension ( I'm not a mechanic but I think it's something to do with rear axle; help us out who knows) # A 2000 GL model with 'fancy' rear suspension and different dash(round clocks instead of oblong speedo on 'L') # A 2000 Ti model as top of range with fuel injection and more luxurious equipment( rev counter, elec windows) Then at the end of its career(around 1980 when the 505 was already a big succes), Peugeot scrapped the 2 liter versions and gave us the 1.8 in GR and SR trim. The GR was like a GL and the SR was pretty much a Ti without the great engine of that model, but with the goodies like elec windows and luxurious upholstery. Now again, this is what was the case in Europe( I lived in The Netherlands for a long time and that's where I got this info). I'm not sure about the UK or Ireland, so please don't be upset if this is not correct here. Hope this some useful info, Good luck. PS; I currently have a '78 504 GL and a '85 305GTX myself, and love them.
