when hunting for bits of 104 brakes i note that '75 appears to be a magic cut-off year. can anyone tell me what actually happened or if there is actually a big enough difference to make it a bad idea trying to mix late and early parts? Cheers!

I think Peugeot changed supplier at this point. I'm not sure how compatible these things are but I suspec that the Teves and Bendix rears are quite different. Changing over whole subsystems should be fine though. For instance I have a set of front discs/pads/calipers from my ZS which you could easily bolt straight on!

Actually the front brakes are sstandard across the range so there's no difference between the front discs on the ZL or the ZS. Which made the ZS pretty underbraked even in standard form. But I've fixed that with 505GTi discs!

so given the heiritage would 205 calipers and aftermarket grooved venteds go in? (don't think we need to get toooo silly!)
