hey I know you may have seen this in the technical section but this problem is driving me insane any ideas people before I drive the car up the wall like it is me. Can anyone offer any advise. My 404 1.8 diesel XDP4-85 engine has an intermittent misfire when not driving, problem vanishes when engine is working (underload). I have gone down usual route new injectors, re-con injector pump, new fuel filter, no air in fuel system. Compression test showed couple of cylinders low. Re-ground all valves problem is exactly the same. Dose this engine have any known problems of cracks in head poor compression etc??? Rest of engine is in very good condition no crank case pressure!!! Running out of ideas any help would be appreciated Thanks Chris

is it difficult to start from cold? when my 504 had head gasket / possible head crack it always did the same think, i.e. it would pressurise the coolant system and start pushing all of the coolant out past the pressure cap, and eventually overheat due to lack of coolant have you checked that the pump isn't getting air bulbs in the fuel? put clear pipe from the filter to the pump and make sure that there are no air bubbles in there also look at the leak off pipes. I've had a few older diesels do strange things because of a small crack in a leak off pipe. this pipe is cheap so might be worth just changing them all anyway
