Hi folks, I hope you can help. I have searched the forum for SPI and nothing came up, which surprised me, so apologies if this is an FAQ and I have missed something.
I have a lovely green 1993 Peugeot 106, low mileage (75K), a 106XT 1360cc petrol. I bought it in July with a year's MOT, after having two more recent cars that lasted only a year. I wanted a classic because I am fed up with tech which fails and then is irreparable. It is a lovely car which I am starting to like a lot.
A couple of weeks ago she started having a starting problem. Would not start unless I put the accelerator pedal down, then did and ran, misfiring a little, with a few revs, until warm, then ran beautifully. I took her to the garage yesterday, a place I have confidence in. Some improvement, but tended to play up still.
The bad news they said, was it was looking like a problem with the SPI unit, which apparently is 'single point ignition', and a sort of carb with ceramic inner parts that wear out. They are unobtainium and there is no way around it.
Am I looking at the end of a beautiful and rather rare classic car that otherwise runs perfectly? I hadn't expected this. At the moment she starts with the foot flat down on the gas. Will this be a stable scenario, or will the car now deteriorate until it becomes unusable? I have an elderly mother (96) I need to run about and I must have a reliable motor. I have also just paid for a year's insurance.
Thanks in anticipation for your collective wisdom.
Tony
