I had to remove the offside front strut on the 604 because the spring seat has almost torn off of the strut. I'm glad that a mechanic spotted it before the suspension collapsed completely.
Anyway I removed the shock absorber insert from the strut, but in the process I have lost a fair bit of oil.
Once I have gotten the spring seat welded back on:- 1. Where can I buy a suitable oil to refill the damper, and what sort do I need? 2. Is there a specific proceedure to refill it? I suspect that dropping the insert into the strut, and refilling with oil, then working the insert up and down a few times whilst keeping the oil level high should do it... the bottom of the inset seems to have some vent holes that allow oil in a and out as the shaft moves up and down

The correct oil is Esso Oleofluid, Peugeot part no`9730.27.If I remember the ammount is 330cc per strut. The important thing is to make sure the insert goes together without damaging the seals. When I did this job I put the outer part of the insert into the strut, then filled the fluid into that part, then fit the middle of the insert,it will overflow into the strut but don`t worry.Make sure the bush and ring locate into the insert and then the oil seal will be flush withthe top of the strut, then screw down the coller.A few pumps and you will have a shocker.[or a shocker of a job] Does this sound ok?? I have done lots [many years ago] and never had a problem, best of luck.

I got the oil from Dean Hunter, and it all seems okay now.
