It would appear that 604s are both rare but still relatively low value in the UK. My 604 is apparently one of the oldest in the UK and also rare due to having manual transmission (so I'm told) On the other hand one went on ebay for £350 last week. The thing is that I don't really like petrol engines much, and the fuel consumption is pretty crippling (about 20mpg) I'm thinking that what this car really needs is a 505 2.5 turbo diesel engine, preferably the intercooled 110bhp one as fitted on the continent. I think that the V6 engine would probably have to be pushed beyond 4000rpm to make much more power than the diesel, and with a bit tuning the 2.5 TD would be almost as fast in the real world. 35mpg would be easy as well I should think.
It would be an easy swap if crashed or rusty 505 was available as I think I could just swap over the entire front subframe and suspension, gearbox and diff. The 505 saloons had the same front track as the 604 I think.
The only thing is that the loss of originality makes me feel a little guilty. On the other hand the car has been resprayed at some point, and the rear wings appear to be off the later 604 with square fuel flap. Under the bonnet is brown whilst the rest of the car is gold. The front seat belts have also been messed with and the car has a few bits of rust and previous welding, so although it is usable it will never be a show car and never be original either.
The current V6 engine has done about 110,000 miles and seems to be in good condition.
opinions?

I say keep the 604 original,it is a lot of work to convert it to diesel as there is so much to alter, fuel tank, exhaust, electrics etc etc.Why not find your self a 505GTD Turbo and then you will have two great old original cars..

I've got too many cars already. Are there any 604 TDs left on the road in the UK?

That'd be better. Try and find an original 604TD.
