Does my 1975 604 SL need leaded fuel? If unleaded does it need 95 RON or 98 RON?

Just use unleaded, both 95 and 98 are ok. Don't bother with additives. Unleaded 98 is better suited to match the original octane level. I used 95 in my 504Coupe V6 (same PRV as yours but in Bosch injection version, not carbs) for over 4 years until earlier this year when I switched to 98 when a lot of people told me it was better suited. No problem whatsoever with either, just slightly better responses with 98.

what kind of fuel consumption do you get on the 504? I'm getting maybe 17-18mpg with the 604 which is pretty bad. Maybe it needs a tune up or something.

Consumption? What's that? I don't even think about it, otherwise I'd never drive the car... I have the 144bhp PRV fuel injected version, i.e. the engine that just followed yours and which is both slightly more powerful and economical (but not by much). In terms of fuel consumption, here are Peugeot official figures (litres of fuel for 100km): constant 90km/h: 8.7l constant 120km/h: 11.1l urban: 16.1l I can validate these thanks to a very recent motorway trip, cruising at 110-120km/h. I had completely refuelled shortly before reaching the motorway and when I refuelled after 240km, I put 24l of petrol in the tank, so I had done an average of 10l. When on the Boulevard Peripherique in Paris, I easily reach 18-20l! In mpg (with 3.79gal to the litre), the above figures give you: constant 60mph: ~27mpg constant 70mph: ~22mpg urban: ~15mpg I'd say that you need to take 10% off these figures for your PRV carb version (more if you have an auto gearbox in which case, trail a tanker behind your 604), so, 17-18mpg does not necessarily sound way off the norm, especially if you have a heavy foot. Nevertheless, there is no harm in getting your carbs tuned. It's also worth having the automatic starter checked, sometimes it remains open all the time. In any case, the 2664cc PRV is everything but economical with regards to fuel consumption.

mine is a manual ( 4 speed ) the engine doesn't seem that powerful either I couldn't keep up with a Mark III Golf CL on Monday, which I guess has a 1.8 engine ?

Well, it only produces 136bhp and the 604 is a big car...

I don't think that 1450kg is that heavy. I guess that the aerodynamics are a total disaster though.
