I recently bought a V6 406 coupe and although I love it have noticed that it takes over 10 miles of driving for the heater to start blowing any hot air! I've sat outside with the engine running for over 20mins before with no joy - it only seems to heat up when you drive. Is this normal? I've owned other Peugeots before and never come across this?

No, it's not normal. I've got a V6 Coupé too and it heats up very quick (couple of minutes), even in Scotland where we freeze all year round!
I think the car is too recent to have a dirty radiator, although depending on its age and mileage, you could start by purging the cooling system and start afresh with new fluid. You could also check for any thermostatic problem. I take it there does not appear to be problems with the fan inside the car.
How about the water temperature gauge? Does it show a normal temperature?

Sound like the thermostat is on the blink, or maybe missing! If it is stuck open the coolant will always be circulating the radiator.
When the engine is cold, coolant should only pass through the engine and heater matrix allow a quick warm up.
When the engine it is hot, the thermostat will open allowing coolant to circulate the radiaitor as well, giving the necessary cooling.
If it is working, then maybe the heater matrix itself is blocked. When was the coolant last changed? When you check the thermostat it would be worth draining the complete system, flushing and refilling with a good long life coolant like Comma Coldstream.
