I am new to Peugeot ownership and this website, I purchased an L reg 309 last week, at first all was well, but today on arrival at work, I noticed that the dash board stop warning light was on and the red light on the extreme of the water temp gauge was also lit up. The hand book says these may come on when the car is running, to indicate a fault. But mine are on when the key is turned to midway position (not running) the temp gauge needle shows normal. When the car is running these lights go out, My question is - Is this normal?

Yes, it is perfectly normal to have these lights on when you set the ignition key to the 'contact' or 'accessories' position. You must have noticed several steps when you turn the key into a car: contact -> accessories -> start.

Hi, gary7,
I agree with 504V6Ti - as far as I know these (and other) warning lights come on as you turn the key to let you check that the relevant bulbs are working.

Thanks to you both for your help, I understand that the car I bought had been standing for some time, this may help explain why the stop and water temp lights were not coming on while I was in the process of - getting used to a different vehicle - I had wrongly assumed that the stop light (then a dark non-functioning item) may have had some links to the brake lights, but a blown blub had caused it's demise. When after a week of use the two blubs in question, began to function, alarm bells rang and I then decided to finally read the owners manual to discover the true meaning of that stop light. The manual does state that should this light EVER come on with another system light i.e water temp, then this is the area of failure, and you should stop driving this car and contact your local Peugeot dealer. At once I thought that I had bought a LEMON. Thank you again for the peace of mind.
