1) Put fuel in tank ! 2) Locate the fuel primer in the engine bay, this will be part of the fuel filter assembly normally bolted to the bulk head. 3) On top the filter housing is a plunger knob which will be in the down position, you need to turn it to allow it to come up. 4) You need to then find the bleed screw on the exit pipe which goes to the injector pump, this is normally on the union. Open it. 5) Start to pump the primer, until diesel is drawn up from the tank and flow freely from the bleed screw without air. You will get diesel everyware so have plenty of spare rag to hand. 6) close the bleed screw on a downwards stoke, then continue to pump until resistance is felt. 7) As you completely ran out, you will now need to slacken one of the fuel injectors union, the smaller bolt on the top. 8) Once loosened start to pump again until diesel is drawn out of pipe leading to the injector. On a downwards stroke, hold and screw the pump lever closed. Tighten the injector union. 9) Turn on the pre-heat glow plugs as normal. Allow to go out, push you accellerator fully down and crank the engine, dont stop until the engine is running. It will chug and miss lots until its running, you will need to keep it revving or it will stop. Once clear of all the air in the system the engine will run normally. 10) Clean up the mess from the diesel, and check everything is tightly done up. Slack screw/bolt will let air in.
Finally if it wont start, at the point when you have drawn fuel up throught he filter and bled it, and are undoing a injector union - after pumping you might have to crank the engine to assist. You may run the battery down so have a jump start available.
On the Lucas/CAV pumps their is a bleed screw on the pump itself right in the middle of the body, dont know if this exisits on Bosch.
If by chance you TD has the later fuel filter which is encases in a black plastic case near the battery, you will also have the squeezy ball ! This is the primer.

Thanks Mat, problem wasn't lack of deisal, as I thought it was ( I haven't been driving for a while and my friend drives it ) What happens is it starts up runs for a minute then cuts out. Sometimes it will re-start but mostly it won't Any ideas on this ? stevepamment@yahoo.co.uk

hello Steve, I have left you an email , but an after thought could also be an electrical fault with the stop solinoid on the pump maybe.
