P reg 406 crunches going into third

My P reg 406 GLX td crunches/grinds anytime I put it in third gear but not when coming out of third. Clutch is not slipping and apart from the crunching everything operates normally. Has any of you had this problem and what was the remedy. One mechanic says it needs a clutch and another says it needs a gearbox. One of those times when try this and try that could prove very expensive.

Hi,

sounds very similar to the problem we had with our 607, cured by fitting a new synchro ring (fortunately done under warranty, the car had only done 30k). Don't ask me what a synchro ring is, as far as I know it's a spinny thing in the gearbox.
