My 504 has got the wobbles, so as a matter course in renewing and replacing the whole mechanical status of the car anyway - I am going to exchange the steering rack, and track rods/ends.
I see there are two steering racks, pre and post 1980. What I need to know is what does an exchange rack come with? gaiters I assume! and does it come with new arms, as there are going to be rubber bushes worn on the old one.
Any advice.
The wheel bearing, tightened up ok on just 1/8th of a turn and runs inline so at the present am not thinking this to be the cause of the wobble. The steering wheel can very slightly be moved up and down and I get the odd clonk from the steering shunting the car lock to lock.

Depending on the supplier the rack should come complete, with track rod ends gaiters etc, ask the supplier. I had my rack rebuilt for a third of the cost of a new one. Steering coloums have a small bush at the top and these wear allowing the steering wheel to move up and down, it will fail the mot if it is excessive. Have you checked the steering uj for wear, that could be the cause of vauge steering and noise.

Hi, 505GRD (or is that big cousin!??)
Have bought a new rack for £27 on line from buypartsby.co.uk so hopefully will fit it tomorrow if it doesn't rain. Thanks for the tip on the UJ. I do have some big clonking that built up over the few miles I've done this week, so fingers crossed this will fix it. Mat.

ok update on this. Unpacked the rack today which I got delivered to my dad (nice big drive and workshop!!), to find it was the correct one:-) but... not very well overhalled. The rubber bushes were worn, and the replacement gaiters incorrect, one split on the end! Sent it back. Still got the car up on axle stands wheels off and tapped of the track rods from the struts.
One of the bolts was a right pig and had to be chisselled off (lucky I had an ebay bargain track rod kit to hand). With the tie rods free of the struts I found the whole rack was alarmingly loose on its mountings. This didn't show with the weight of the suspension transfered along the tie rods from the wheels. OK tightened all this up. Checked the UJ on the steering, all ok. Checked the rod ends for wear, all ok. Got it all back together and still the blooming wheel wobble at 50mph->. Swopped front to rear wheels, still there.
Its driving me mad now. The steering has no play in it, the very tiny movement on the steering wheel is seen in the road wheel.
Any suggestions, before I need to grow my hair to pull out?
Thanks Mat.
