One of my 404 Cab plugs has seized up and in the process of trying to shift it I have managed to round off the hex and now the plug box spanner slips. The only solution seems to me to remove the tappet cover, then taking out the pipe shaft of the offending plug, before finally using a plug socket or spanner. I am not sure whether there is a proper technical term for the pipe shaft which protects the plug, but my question is, can anyone advise me please as to how this pipe shaft can be taken out from its seat in the head? Also, is there any particular way this should be assembled again?

Hi depending on how rounded off the plug is will affect whether you have any joy with a plug socket. I have witnessed removal of a completely rounded plug in a very limited recess by the following method done by an accomplished welder. Break off the plug porcelain level with top of plug. Select a piece of round bar to but fit snugly onto top of plug. Probably about 10mm dia. Bend or weld bar into an L or T piece. Weld bar to plug top. Undo plug and bar as one unit. Although this will sound impossible to weld, it will not be too difficult for a good welder. The metal shrouds commonplace now are probably pressed into position. Best of luck T.

Thanks for your suggestion. I don't know whether I will go for this option before looking for something less daring!! I would like to see if I could ease out the steel tube from its seat. That will completely expose the plug and removal will be a doddle.
I have also read your question about your 406 aircon, and have forwarded it to a friend who owns a 406, and is a devout Peugeot enthusiast, who is very likely to be able to help you with this.
