Does anyone know how I can confirm the date of manufacture of a Peugeot 304s cabriolet from the chassis number? Mine was imported and does not have an age related number plate, and it may also just be tax exempt!
Any other thoughts on dating the car would be gratefully received

Yes, the model type and serial number (found on the manufacturer's plate within the engine bay) will help you track the year of manufacture.
304 Coupé/Cab 'S' were manufactured from 1972 to 1975. So yours is between 30 and 33 years old. Enough to be Tax exempt I think!
Model ----- Date of manufacture ------- Serial numbers 304B02 --- march 1972 to july 1975 --- 3298001 to 3727020 304C02 --- march 1972 to july 1975 --- 3298002 to 3727419

The manufacturing records are held by L'Aventure Peugeot, 75 avenue de la Grande Armée, 75116 Paris. If you send them the VIN number they can tell you the date of manufacture. DVLA will accept their certification for dating.

Roughly how long does it take to get a reply from them? Mike.

You'll probably be okay writing in English as generally everyone is better at foreign languages than us! However if you wanted a short letter translated I could sort it for you.

Well, still no word from France but if anyone can help with some specific info I would still be grateful, but will need proof to get the age related plate that I was after. I have two 304s cabriolets ( thanks to the lure of e-bay ), neither in very good condition. One is a lh drive chassis numbsr 304BO 23712056 which has an age related plate but the one I'm more interested in finding out about is chassis number 304BO 3513252 with engine number to match but is currently on a 'y' plate. Unfortunately research so far is inconclusive but I dont think it would be tax exempt however I would still like to be able to get an age related plate for it. Any advice welcome, DVLC have no specific dates. Oh and also looking for spares as both are rather temperamental!

Clearly the 304 you're interested in is older than the other one which has an age related plate: serial nb 3513252 against 3712056 (probably a late 74 or early 75 model).
I reckon the 'Y' plate one is late 73 or 74 manufactured. I'll ask on the French 304 forum.
