I pulled the driveshafts on my ageing 309 yesterday to replace the CV boots only to find that these are of a type that do not dismantle. When I have done this job on other cars it was always simple - knock the CV joint off, fit the new boot, grease and reassemble.
Do I have to buy stretch-over boots or is there another way to do the job ? Has anyone here ever fitted stretch boots using a cone and if so, was it difficult ?
I don't really want to disturb the inner joints if it can be avoided.

Back in the day it seemed to be permissible to cut the CV boots and glue them back together afterwards. I'm guessing this is a no go these days? Spoilsports!

Just a quick update. Fitted the stretch-over boots and it was probably one of the easiest and quickest jobs I have ever done on a vehicle. 'How to' pics here : www.buypartsby.co.uk/cv-boot-fitting-instructions.phpA couple of tips for anyone contemplating fitting some: 1/ No need to buy the 'special' cone spray - any household spray on furniture polish will do. 2/ If you are fitting to a Peugeot, measure the outside diameter of the CV joint housing and ask the supplier to choose a boot size which will give a snug fit. Apparently, due to the diverse types and sizes of CV's fitted, it's easy to find that you have the wrong one. And finally, it goes without saying really that you should give the outside of the housing and shaft a really good clean before fitting. Dave.

Hi Clouser, Glad you managed to complete the job ok. Just some info to follow up, although too late for your own job. The ouer cv joints are removeable - held by an internal sprung ring on the shaft. Just hit the joint with a soft faced mallet (after peeling back the boot if it is to be reused). Also I have recently seen split boots at my local trade motor factor. They have a tongue & groove joint along the split and come with a tube of special glue. Avoids any dismantling. I presume this will comply with MOT standards, though may not last as long as conventional boots. Has anyone had any experience of these? Regards, Donaldiesel

I know that most drive shafts do dismantle in the way you suggest (been doing them since the 1960s') but the ones fitted to my 309 are a different design - no split ring in a recess on the shaft and certainly no way of knocking them apart.
I think the ones I have are known as 'Tri-poid' type and, as I have since discovered, can only be dismantled with the use of a special press. (£££'s)
First time I had seen anything like these and most annoying as I had already bought the boots for a standard type shaft/joint. Fortunately got a refund on those and, as I reported, the stretch overs were a doddle to fit.
