Hi all,
I'm a newbie, but here goes ..........
2000W 406 hdi 110 turbo estate, 34,000 miles .............
I keep hearing a "tinkling" noise from under the car, only at start up or shut down, with minimum revs, or when the car pulls away, again with minimum revs. Does not appear to be anything loose, but mechanical. Is there anything that can cause this?
I was told by a dealer salesman that this is normal, and it is a valve under the car .............haven't heard any others do it though!
Also, av fuel mileage is about 28 around town & max of 40 on a long run .............. I suspect all is not well ......... Advice please, as £60+ per hour for local garages is NOT an option!!

Hi,
Check the Engine cover on top of the engine as the bobbins that hold these on are common for breaking and cause the engine cover to vibrate.

Check the bottom pulley. On some HDi's this can start to come apart and one of the tell tale signs is a tinkling rattly noise.
Your car is due a cambelt now (on age, not mileage) and pug recommend the pulley be replaced at the same time.
Your fuel consumption is way below norm. I manage 55 in mixed motoring and 72 on a run. Try a full service and a dose of fuel system cleaner before panicking though.
Good luck.
