My auto dimming rearview mirror looks as if it has melted behind the glass!. the liquid that dimms has flowed to the bottom of the mirror! why did this happen? should i get this repaired or replaced?

I don't think these can be repaired. And if it could, you'd probably find it more expensive than replace the mirror. Be interested to find out how much they cost though....

A Mk2 (Mark2) is a 2nd series 406, i.e. post 1999 facelift. As long as it is an auto-dim mirror, it does not matter whether it comes from a Coupé, a saloon or an estate, they're all the same. So go for the mirror on ebay if it looks like the right one, which I think it does.

Mines a 1997 model anyway, but the connector block when unplugged is black, the MK2 is blue. Any difference? have a look at it . item no. 4578747973

Hey, it's just the colour of the connector, that's all. I'm 99% certain that the auto-dim mirror is the same on Mk1 and Mk2 406s. For the sake of £45, go for it, you can always put it back on ebay if it's not the right one.
