My R reg 106 doesnt always start first time, it'l turn over +try but sometimes it takes 8/9 goes before it actually starts! This is a really intermittant fault, it doesnt seem to have anything to do with length of last journey/time of day, quite bizarre!Itl be sods law Ill take it to a garage and it'l start fine so thought Id ask if anyone else has found a similar prob/might offer an explaination for it??

You are not alone, mine is exactly the same. I think it is a problem with the engine immobaliser, the key has a chip in it and disables the engine when taken out. I have posted a message here hoping for a reply!

Hi, if it just turns over and over but won't fire it does sound like an imobiliser problem. The most common problem on 106's is the aeriel around the ignition switch that picks up the chip in the key (part no. 616050). other problems can come from the conection between the main harness and the engine harness (black conector infront and below the battery) There are lots of other possibilities but these are common and cheap to try!!Hope this helps.
Regards Andy

Many Thanks Andy.
I will have a go at what you suggested and post results when completed.
I expect it will become obvious how to change the part (616050) when purchased, however any pointers will be gratefully received.

It's dead easy, you just take off the steering column covers and it unclips from around the ignition barrel, you can't get it wrong!!

Hi Andy
I will be changing it tomorrow, I found the part OK, your part number was spot on.
I will let you know the outcome.
Thanks again.
