On starting my 1998 406 1.9 Diesel with Bosch pump two things can happen 1. If I let the heater plugs warm up the engine will fire up fine, engine works fine but rev counter will not work 2. If started without heater plugs allowed to warm up, even when engine is already warm, then it wont run on all cylinders and there is loads of blue smoke, HOWEVER THE REV COUNTER WORKS.
Could this be an electrical or mechanical problem??
Any help much appreciated!!!

Electrical problem. The feed for the rev counter comes from a magnetic pulse, I think the sensor is on the flywheel, so this cannot be a mechanical fault. The XUD engine in some applications will always need glow plugs to start hot or cold, found this with a 309GRDT too.
