Hello all, I have turned once again to this forum due to the excellent help given once before!
The second of my inherited Pugs (1985 205 GRD with 60,000 on the clock) has the following problem:
There seems to be some sort of fuel pump fault - I can start the car with the manual plunger type pump but it will not start of it's own accord. It runs perfectly reliably, if a bit fast, and will stop 'on the key' but it requires the manual pumping to start again no matter if it's hot or not.
I have replaced the glow plugs with nice Bosch ones as the originals were still fitted so that's not the bother.
Any ideas??

Surely you've looked at the possibility of the problem being a flow-back through defective filtre-head valves ? What would also point to this is that the car would tend to start when having been parked nose downhill, but would always fail to start having been parked uphill. Please let me know how you've got on, as it is some time scince you posted your question.

The fuel is being allowed to drain back towards the tank, yes I'd agree the fuel filter is a prime suspect area. Also consider all the rubber pipes as they could perish, and just check simply the fuel unions are tight each side of the filter head and also on the pump. Replacing the black rubber pipes with clear fuel grade plastic pipes is a good idea as you can see any air in the system. New fuel filter heads are not too expensive, any decent auto factors will have them in stock.
