Hi I have an old 205 GRD that has been running well if a little smokier - came home from work (40 miles no problems) went to start the next day @ 11am and all that happened was the engine turned over but no life out of the engine! checked the stop solenoid on the injector pump - Fine used a set of jump leads and after @ 30 sec with the engine constantly tuning over it did start and whilst it was hot it started again but as soon as it gets cold nothing ? any ideas?

I had similar problem with a high mileage 309 D Turbo. Problem was caused by air getting into injector pump through seal where throttle linkage goes into the pump. After 30 secs turning the starter the engine self bleeds. It is worse if you park facing against the hill as the fuel runs back to the tank. In my case I had to remove the pump to replace the seal. This may also be your problem.

Have you considered the glow plugs. The XUD engine will fire up even if a couple of the glow plugs are blown. If another one fails you wont get it starting from cold. Before removing them and checking just make sure they have power, use a multimeter (or bulb and wire) to take a reading between the feed wire and the engine block when the glow light its on. If there is 12v power its time for a new set of plugs I expect. They are £20 a set or there abouts and very common, which means there are a lot of 3rd party brands, some people swear by Beru but Bosch, NGK and Lucas are of course well known brands.

Thanks to all! problem solved!!! ! :-)
faulty connections to the timer circuit control box ( the blue one on the near side inner wing) found by checking for voltage at the glow plugs when you initialy turn the key. replaced the connectors and hey presto! theres life in the old gal yet!
thanks to all
