Hello Peugeot Fans! I am seeking advice with a strange problem with my 305 SRD. The engine runs well and has ample power, but it dosnt start easilly, needing to be cranked over several times, and the idling is erratic. The engine sometimes just stops when idling. If i rev it up after its been idling there is a lot of white smoke, but no smoke when driving along normally.
I have checked the glowplugs and control circuit and they draw approx 19 Amps each (decreasing as they heat up). I have replaced the fuel filter. The car has done 160K but dosnt use a noticeable amount of oil and the compression seems good judging by the sound on turning over. Also, there is strong engine braking on overrun. The fast idle control is working and correctly adjusted. Its a Bosch pump and heated filter.
What now? Any ideas please?
Thanks Donaldiesel

Sound isn't going to be the true judge of compression! Somehow my Mum managed to bend two con rods in her 205XLD, it was a complete pig to start, but once warm all ok. Was a complete mystry until the head was removed and the crank turned to see two of the pistions never came fully to the top of the block. Whip out the injectors and do a compression test!

Hi 504 GLD All the compression testers Ive seen are only suitable for petrol engines. Where would I get a diesel one? Or is there somewhere I could hire one. With the high pressures in a diesel engine I presume its a pretty serious piece of kit. Local injection specialist wants £60 to do the test. Regards, Donaldiesel

I think there having a laugh! Have you also tried an Italian decoke? The injectors could well be past there best. The timing could also be out, white smoke is normally an indication of it being to detarded. You should be able to buy a screw in tester at a tools shop.
