Hi, My Peugeot 305 S5 (XU5S engine) has a bad flat spot about 3000 revs and poor acceleration. I have cleaned the plugs and twin choke carburettor, checked the timing & compression(good) and checked for air leaks, but with little difference.
This weekend I checked the valve clearances and they were all wider than spec. I also noticed that the cam tips came to a shallow 'V' point. Does this indicate a knackered camshaft? Also, would this explain the symptoms I describe? Regards, Donaldiesel

The camshaft problem is unlikely to result in a flat spot just noisey valve operation as it will be present at all revs. The flat spot is more likely to be a problem witj the carb. I would suggest that the vacuum advance is playing up as this can cause flat spots, as can blocked jets. The poor accelaeration could be due to faulty vacuum advance also as your timing will be out across the rev range.
These sort of problems are qalways hard to nail down as it could be one of many causes, but not likely the cam.
I know from an artical we published in the magazine that this engine has a weakness in the cam/valve area which is only solved by replacing the cam and valve train!

Hi, Thanks for suggestions. Finger does seem to be pointing at the carb. I did fit a Webber carb from a 305 Automatic, but it didnt make any difference to the performance or flat spot. It seems odd if the second carb had exactly the same fault? I have now overhauled the original carb so I will see if that changes anything. What was the date of the article you refer to? Id be interested to read this. Regards

It was in the yearbook issue, the one with the green cover, from last January. It may have been before you were a member. The article is online on the main website. If you log in using your surname and membership number and go to the Peugeotist back issues link you can download issue 132 in pdf format and the artical is in that issue.
Hooray for club membership! (and the internet)
(edit) If the fault was in the vacuum advance then the fault would persist across teh carb change

Thanks, I found the article. However it is about the 305 series 1 with XK-R series engine. Mine is a series 2 with different engine XU5S. Useful comments on worn camshaft though. Regards, Donaldiesel
